Just got a curado 300ej this spring and used it this past weekend for the MN opener. Loved it but the level wind did not move during casts/free spool. Is this normal or do I have a defective one?

That's normal, it has a disengaging levelwind, meaning it doesn't move back and forth during casting. A few other reels out there do the same.

I hate disengaging level winds.
