Hey all,

I need to replace my trolling motor before this season and I am looking for a bit of advice on which direction to head. I have a basic 16' Smoker Craft aluminum boat that is a bit heavier because I have added a floor and casting platform.

I'm keeping the budget as low as possible while still getting something that will work good enough. Right now I am leaning toward the MotorGuide X3 series. I really like the idea of a cable pull system as I feel like it will give me the best control. Obvious benefit being the $..

I guess the real question is how much of a difference will I find between a 45lb and 55lb motor? My ancient MinnKota 42lb could push the boat along at 2 mph on full blast, so does anyone have an estimation what a new 45 or 55 could do to that. The price difference is $150 (see: many bucktails) and if the difference wont be noticeable, I'd rather save the $ (see: spend it on bucktails).

Of course, I am far from married to the X3, I just like what I have seen/read about it. If anyone could offer some insight, or any other suggestions I would really appreciate it. Anyone have good/bad experiences looking at used stuff? Buying a trolling motor on craigslist scares the pee outtah me.

Thx,
ErkEsx

If it were me I would just save the money, it will go somewhat faster but for 150$ IMO it's not worth it

You wouldn't see any significant changes till you stepped up to a 24v IMO.
