Im from wisconsin and fish the local madison chain, and are season obviously doesnt open for awhile. Ill. has pierce lake which i heard can be pretty nice for musky. Was basically wondering if anyone knows of this lake and would it be worth it to take a weekend or two down there and fish it while im waiting for the season to open up here. Its only an hour away from madison.

Thanks!

Spent endless hours there learning that lake and have now moved on to different waters. It's a tough lake for sure. Lake is loaded with shad making it a tough bite. What I can tell you is that my best action was from high speed trolling to trigger action and throwing crazy colors and baits. Spent lots of time imatating shad colors and profiles with poor results. Never seen a lake with so much shad in it ever:(

Over the last 12 years I have maybe fished pierce 30 times and caught maybe 30 fish. Only one has been over 40 inches. Most have been dead on 32 inches or so. They are fat with super tiny heads. Not a fun lake to fish at all. I have for the most part only been there super early in the spring. They really like mantas on the far south side of the lake in the muck. If I were you I would stay home make the wife happy and paint a bathroom or something. Lock your truck too a lot of riff raf in the Rockford area. Statistics don't lie it is like Detroit, a subsidized hell hole.

ive fished Pierce the last 2 years for the same reason you mentioned, to get out before the WI opener. The shad are everywhere, like snag one on every cast everywhere. Some are huge like 12". The biggest problem however, is that the entire lake is surrounded by a state park and almost every shore is accessible so when its nice out you cant get within two cast lengths of any shore to fish by boat because its shoulder to shoulder with shore fisherman. I managed one fish in those two trips and it was a 30 incher. Im thinking ill drive farther this year.

There's an old saying " a day of fishing beats a day of work any day...unless the lake you are fishing is Pierce Lake"
