I picked up a 681vs this past august that has a 05 135 evinrude on it. Just wondering if someone has a similar set up and what speeds u are getting. I am getting about 48 mph with a stock aluminum prop at about 4500 to 4700 rpm. Thinking about getting a stainless prop this spring to get a little more speed. Not sure what pitch to get. Any suggestions?

Get on the phone with a Evinrude Dealer and get some info from them.

You need to determine what your peak RPM range is. Consider trying a BRP Viper prop at the pitch that gets you to the very top of that range with a light load. The Viper performs well on my 681 (had a 15p viper on a 115 fast strike and now a 17p viper on a 135 etec HO and tried many others on both engines) but every boat is different. Mark's Performance Props has a three blade razor that is also outstanding, if not a hair better than the Viper. The Tempest runs a bit faster top end but doesn't hold the bow of the 681 up well enough to prevent porpoising at anything less than WOT. Four blades, including the trophy, lagged the overall performance viper and 3 blade razor for me. But again, every boat is different.

Jason, just be care-ful wanting more speed with this boat. I've known 2 guys that have rolled their 681's. They had 135 optimax, with a stainless prop. They were getting 61-63 mph. This hull is fast, and this rig gets squirrelly with a chop and speeds over 50. This may be one reason why Ranger discontinued this boat.

I called Ranger when I had a 681 and talked to their "prop guy" and he recommended the Viper as well.

JD has a good point, I have the older model of that boat that will only carry a 115. I have been in 3 of the new boats that have had 135's and I will agree that they can get squirrely. I think that the stainless prop may have something to do with it. I have an aluminum on mine but did some testing with stainless. I had a ton of bow lift and far less control with the ss than my aluminum. I can't say that any of those boats would make the speed that JD was talking about, but did see 51-53 pretty consistently, once was on the east side of the big V. The result was a couple busted batteries from being pounded in some pretty serious waves. But in all reality, I would say that boat handles waves as well as any for its size, and maybe better.
