Location: Becker MN | I don't think lightest would be the way to go on a rod blank, the lighter you go the more you will compromise strength. you can go down in weight on the components: titanium guides, diff cork or smaller amounts to keep weight down.
The nasty and predator are made of the same material so the weight should be the same.
Have you fished with a balanced rod? the weight will be heavier over all but will be lighter in the hand as it will be neutral there. |

| The XH pred blank is built tough, not the lightest but far from the heaviest. On the other hand the predator H blank is super light but not like the nasty in terms of action. Are you looking for a less expensive blank or open to all? If that's not the case I would just go with the nasty blank. |

Forgive me for calling you out on this one, but your statement is false. If that were the case, then the St Croix Legends and Xtremes would be the weakest blanks around. I think it's safe to say that isn't the case.
To the OP:
To the best of my knowledge, the lightest blanks you will find will be the St Croix Legends and TI's. The Predators are a close 3rd.
FWIW, I always build rods as light as possible! Light weight gives much better performance!

Location: Becker MN | Sorry I should have clarified more about the legends and their weight. I was inferring that lighter does not always mean better. Also that the predator and legend tournament are built out of the same material and resin, I talked to St. Croix about this. The big advantage to the predator is that they make nine foot in different actions vs only the one nine foot option in the legend tournament, I also really like the color.
We would have to agree to disagree on building the lightest rod for more performance. |

I pride myself on building rods that not only look good, but perform as good as they look. The fact that lighter rods perform better has been proven over and over- it's not my opinion, it's fact. The lighter a rod is, the further it will cast, the more sensitive it is, etc. The differences are much more noticeable on trout and bass rod but it holds true for musky rods as well. If you don't believe me, you can test it yourself. Get two blanks that are the same, build one with full grips, big double foot guides, and underwrap them. Build the second with split grips, no fore grip, and HD single foot guides. You won't believe you're fishing with the same blanks. And the second one will outperform the 1st by a mile!
