I had an E TEC a few years ago motor was quiet and low fumes. The big draw back on all E TEC s was the sprark plugs. The engine would not run properly unless the plug gap was in line with the factory "1/2 moon" on the head. If you want to check this on your engine pull a plug and see if there is a magic marker line downtime insulator in line with the gap. Plugs were marked by tecs so the position of the gap was known It took several boxes of plugs to get 4 that would work. I went to merc now so I don't know if the problem was fixed.
