I would pull the hood and check all your wiring. Two questions..what brand is it and is it brand new? If it is brand new take it back as soon as possible. If it is used it will be worth taking in to be looked at if you want to double check everything is ok. If used but from a dealer they should look at no charge(I would think).Actually more then two questions, does the boat have a 24 volt trolling motor? If so, is your starter battery seperate from those two that would be used for the troller? The reason I ask is my brother hooked his depth finder across his two trolling batteries so it took a shot of 24 volt juice rather then the 12 it should have got. It smoked a little right before it stopped working. I hope it is nothing serious..just got mine back from the shop and was 600 lighter for it(upgraded carbs).
