Location: Northern Illinois | The labor shortage has been growing for quite some time. At first the shortage was in skilled labor (skilled trades) in the 90's to the point where the major manufacturer I worked for imported skilled trades from the oil industry in the south. Then in the early 2000's we started recruiting labor from anywhere and everywhere. Predictably, new employee fallout was high. Now, along with a shortage of labor, we are experiencing a shortage of IC's, or semiconductor chips, on a global scale. Chips are used in almost everything these days, not just cars and trucks. Demand for them is far outstripping supply. Guess what happens when there is a supply shortage? Yup, price goes up. Hang on, I don't think this is a temporary problem. |
