I recommend connecting the kicker steering to the main outboard, and getting some kind of throttle control at the console. I also highly recommend buying a steering knob, they are great for trolling and docking. I don't personally like trolling with my trolling motor down in big waves, the shaft and mounting takes a beating. It can be an advantage in calm water at slower speeds though.
