It is my understanding that bass boats with a stepped transom utilize a second thruhull transducer so they can get a reading while on plane as the transom transducer is either out of the water or in the slipstream.

I run the stock Helix 10 transducer on the transom of my Alumacraft and it works great. I had to readjust the transducer to find the sweet spot but I get good readings at all speeds.
