You need something than can dissolve the gear oil into a solution. That would be Alcohols, ethers, acetone, or other petroleum distillates. You could also use a detergent or degreaser. I would probably try to use a high proof alcohol such as everclear, green degreaser or maybe a water plus oxyclean and Dawn dish soap solution. Use a shop vac or carpet cleaner to vaccum up the solution after letting it sit for awhile.
