First make sure to clean everything off first if you do it yourself. I might even run a new coat of epoxy on to give a good clean surface.
Second: buy more carpet than you think you need, my brother does carpeting and helped me with the project; (read, I stood around and watched in awe as he did the work). I never thought of this but rather than just think how can I "tetris" this thing out of the carpet I have. He made sure the "nap" always ran in the same direction for all the pieces we applied.
Third: Have the proper carpet tools: Good glue, good knives, good carpet rollers, good stretchers
Fourth: Dry fit first, let the glue set up first, have good ventilation
If you follow those rules you can do it yourself.
