Location: Hayward, WI | The advice above is all good. Btfish above coached me through my upgrade. My 80 lb Terrova would shut down of I was working it hard too. 1st thing I did was change out the 40 amp breakers that were in my boat for 60 amp Minn Kota breakers. Still shut off.
Then I upgraded my plug to the Battery Tender plug. Awesome plug compared to the stock Marinco. Still kicked out.
This year I upgraded the stock 8 gauge wire for quality marine grade 4 gauge wire. Heavy duty stuff. I have not been able to get the motor to shut off on it's own since! It also steers much faster under high power as well.
Maybe all I'd have had to really do is upgrade the wire. Not sure. But I know I had Marinco plug failure at one point and they aren't cheap. I don't see the Battery Tender plug failing.
You could do each upgrade step by step and see if you don't need them all. But after upgrading my plug, breaker, and wire, I now worry much less when I'm working upwind of a rock pile on LOTW in 20 mph winds. |
