Subject: Trailer Brakes. Yes or No?

I'm ordering a new boat. Total weight will be slightly under 3000 pounds (so brakes will not be required by law in my state) loaded with gear and fuel. I have the option of ordering the trailer with or without surge brakes. It will be towed with a full size 1/2 ton pick-up.

My question is if the extra stopping ability is worth having to do maintenance on the brake system or the possibility of having to deal with mechanical issues with the brake system?

Yes or no to ordering with brakes?
