The ground is always the first thing to check but it can be a variety of issues. I had something similar this spring. After checking and using a tester, I found out the problem was actually in the adapter I used to go from 7 pin to 4. Bought a new adapter, everything works. I had cleaned all pins/connections so it had to be something internal to the adapter.
