I have a recessed foot pedal and it's not to bad. Fished out of my other boat in Texas last week with it mounted to the deck and it seems like the buttons do get bumped sometimes. Otherwise for me I could do with out the heading button and the continuous button, I all really would need is the spotlock button because you can do the rest of those features from the remote much easier. Having spotlock easily to use is great. I went and did some night fishing last night and I will be calling Minnkota to see if there is a night mode, the lights on the pedal are way to extreme and the blinking light on the heading sensor is very annoying at night.
