I had the exact same problem this year. Did you also have a little rust on your shaft? I bought the whole steering housing and had it replaced before I cracked my 6th beer. For my own knowledge, I ended up taking the old housing apart and the problem was the bearing located at the bottom of the housing. No problems since and my motor is quiet again.
