I ran 16 foot RGB LED strips down each side of my boat. Unhooking a fish at boat side with those on a lighter color kicks ass. Having them cycle through many different colors on a fade or rapid flash makes your boat look like a UFO from a distance.

Maybe that's not something you want to do so this idea might work better. Go to a Walmart and pick up a pair of accent lights from the automotive section. Put them on a RAM plate and wire them up with a 12v accessory plug. Now you have a moveable light (if you have some extra RAM balls laying around) that will do the trick. They pack up small so they'll be out of the way more than a taller light pole. They are flexible so you can aim them in a different direction for other tasks and they work as a great spotlight if you need one. The only downside is if you get halogens they'll get awfully warm so you don't want to grab them by the light.
