Guess I don't know what you mean by fill halfway by themselves?

When you are filling the live well, have it in Auto. If you have it on empty, it will drain while filling, slowing the process.

There should be a healthy spray when in Auto. It would be the same rate as when you are in Recirc. If you have the EZ-Pump on the back, that allows you to fill when on plane. There is an overfill on the back side with a black plastic screen on it.

When returning to a weigh in with a limit of walleyes, I would take that screen off, and replace it with a plastic bag of the overfill. That way, I completely filled the livewell on plane, and limited sloshing and stress on the fish. When I came off plane near the weigh-in, I would switch the livewell to RECIRC. This kept it full with the freshest and coldest water.
