The guy I know who modified his only modified one side so he didn't interfere with the latch area/assembly but it still didn't solve the entire issue. To truly correct it you would have to remove more like you are referring to however my biggest concern with doing this is if I would be jeopardizing any strength? We can make ours work, just not as easy as it could be so for me I am going to leave it alone. But if you come up with an acceptable solution please show us.
