Subject: Lower Unit Question - ETEC 250 HO

Hey Guys,

I am in need of a replacement lower unit on my 2010 E Tec. Here is what I am being told are my 2 options for refurbished units (new isn't an option for me since it's almost twice the cost of a refurbished one) ...

One of them is a heavy duty “M” SLE type, this is NOT what was originally on the engine but it is more dependable, however, you could lose a few miles per hour on top end.

The other remanufactured gearcase is an “L2” type, this is what the original gearcase would be, but not quite as dependable as the heavy duty one.

My question is what make the heavy duty one more dependable? My main trips each year are to LOTW even though I am careful, there are sometimes rocks involved! I don't see myself missing a few miles per hour as I won't be going full blast that often anyways.

Thoughts?

Thanks - Midge
