Mine is on the step and flush with the back of the step. I wasn't the one who mounted it as that's the way my boat came. I can attest that I do not get interference and my graphing is great. I don't know when you are planning on mounting this but I will be getting my boat from storage in 3 weeks.

I've attached two images showing mounting on the "step". I know I would be concerned having it on the lowest portion of the boat and after seeing my graphs working great with the transducer on the "step" I would mount it there again WHEN I buy my next boat.
