Mine is on the step, but hanging out the back. I didn't want it at the lowest point of the boat so it didn't get knocked around in low water or at the ramp. But if you mount it too high on the front bulkhead of the step, you may not have L/R clearance to see adequately. Mine is out the back, I don't have a jackplate and my LSS view is great. No motor wash interference.
