You could also mount a piece of carpeted plywood that is slightly smaller than the width of the gunwale to attach the railing.

On one of my previous boats I took it one step further though;

Nyloc bolted the railing to squares of carpeted Trex mounted on top of the carpeted plywood for a little more railing height. It really locked things down by countersinking the railing bolts (actually the nuts) under the Trex first, then mount the Trex with the railing already attached with 4 large screws per blockā€¦ it turned out good and was a very functional/bulletproof set-up with a HD railing stanchion.

For you guys who use rails for trolling; I have had these type of stanchions break when it gets cold.
