Location: With my son on the water | If you have the bracket I would certainly use it. I have always put it on my rigs even thought I never plan on taking the TM off. But if something does happen it sure makes life easier.
When I installed mine. I taped a piece of paper onto the bow of the boat, then I placed the TM (with the bracket attached to it) on top of the paper in the position I want it. I then take a magic marker and trace the perimeter of the bracket onto the paper.
I then remove the TM from the bracket and place the bracket on top of the paper win the position I had traced. You can then mark the hole locations and the rest it straight forward.
Note: I am right handed so I always mount the head/shaft toward the starboard side of the boat as it is just easier to deploy and retract that way. I also make sure the TM is mounted so the head is within the perimeter of the side of the boat when it is retracted. That way you don't smash it on a dock.
