Reread the OP. Yah, I wouldn't want to use the removeable tie bar if left connected, and trust it to hold up. I think I'd get to the machine store, or a good hardware store, and get heim ends and threaded tubing, with Jam nuts.

Do you have a kicker, or a portable motor? There is a difference. True kickers have heavy duty mounts. And the Merc ProKicker tiller version has centering straps to keep it from moving when tilted up. The removeable bar takes literally seconds to put on and remove. I usually see the permanently connected on those kickers that have the remote control box at the helm. A good boat dealer should have all the parts you need to do this.
