They can be networked through the Nmea 2k system so you can have the heading sensor active on any and all units. You can also choose where to get gps info from or have each unit use there own.

I just purchased 2 HDS-7 Gen2 Touch Units. I do not have an existing NMEA network in the boat, so the 2 units will be linked via Ethernet cable. I am looking at the Point-1 and wondering if I could connect the antenna directly to the primary HDS-7 or if you need a full NMEA network to utilize the antenna.

It's my understanding that the Ethernet connection will allow sharing between the 2 HDS-7 units, but that the connection is not as strong and fast as the NMEA network. If I can indeed plug the antenna directly into the HDS-7 without the NMEA network, will the Ethernet connection between the 2 units allow sharing of the antenna information with the 2nd unit or would the Ethernet connection be insufficient for this type of networking?

Basically I am wondering if I would need to install a full NMEA network to fully utilize the functionality of the antenna on my two HDS-7 units.
