The brakes are most likely surge brakes, so no power is needed for application. Backing up, you will have to manually engage the reverse lock out, unless you are using a 5 pin adapter and the truck reverse light pin is working. I still would get your truck recepticle checked, as I wouldn't want to make a trip without the running lights working.
