It's funny how many voted for Yamaha. It seems like just about every boat I see has a Merc on it, especially new boats. Even though I have a Mercury (it's a 99, and I'm pretty happy with it), I'd place my vote for Yamaha or Suzuki. I fished out of an 18' Lund tiller with a 90 Suzy with 3 guys and was impressed by the motor. Seemed to get up and going well, and was whisper quiet.

Never been in a boat with a Yamaha but any that I've seen on the water seem to be very smooth running motors, and I've read quite a bit about their excellent reliability.
