How are they linked? Ethernet? NMEA? There are LOTS of settings in these units, start by browsing around in the settings and determine what the values are set in the "source" for the chart. Perhaps this is set a certain way and that is causing the problem. I agree, since these have internal GPS modules it should lock in for you on its own and not need the external puck (though the puck is more accurate than the internal). Its possible that if the units are linked together that one unit is sharing the "source" of the other and without that unit on you will get nothing.
I believe you will find what you are looking for in settings under "installation" or "Advanced options".
