| It sounds like mildew, not algae. The mildew may stain the carpet regardless of what you use to treat it, by damaging the fibers. Pressure washing will remove the mildew, but won't kill the mildew in the fibers. I've done this on outdoor carpet before. Remove the mildew as much as possible with a damp towel, clean the stain with water and laundry detergent, rinse, and then dry. Be careful to not spead the stain, work inwards. A wetvac helps with the cleanup. Apply hydrogen peroxide and work it into the area. Then work in some ammonia to the carpet, this will help remove any stain and hopefully kill the mildew. The mildew may have worked it's way under the carpet. If that's the case you will have to take out the carpet and clean underneath that too, or it will come back eventually. Find a different place to store it next year, away from moisture on the ground, or get it higher off the ground so air can circulate before the snow falls. | |
