| My brother just bought a new boat, it's a late 90's lund laker 16' with a mid 2000's honda 25hp engine. I haven't been out in it yet, but he said it was a bit slow to get up on plane with just him in it, and he could not get it on plane at all with his 2 very young kids and his father in law in it. I know the 25hp could be considered fairly minimal for that boat, especially with close to 500lb of people on board (he's 220, dad is 190, two kids combined are maybe 100 tops, plus 6gal gas and 1 battery) but I would have thought it would eventually plane and be at least "ok". I suspected it might be a prop issue, he did say it had some sort of aftermarket prop. He doesnt have a tach to check rpms...without that I dont have any idea how to proceed determining if its a prop issue. I looked on hondas website, and it doesnt appear they have any sort of recommendation for prop size based on type of boat/weight the way mercury does. Mercury's prop selector suggested a 13.5 pitch prop, but they dont offer one that would work it appears.
How would you go about determining if this is in fact a prop issue?
Does anyone have the same/similar rig and have a prop recommendation that he might check his against?
Thanks in advance for any help.
