I had the same issue with mine but didn't do any damage. The motor would just keep spinning in same direction and I would quickly unplug it. It was very random. Maybe every fifth time I hit spot lock. I did not have the foot pedal hooked up.

I know this is no help but after the first few trips it stopped doing it and I didn't change anything.
