I just did a 14 foot aluminum boat I bought, and from recollection it said they must be on front half of vessel on both sides, read from left to right, 3 inch high "block" letters, colors must contrast with backround to appear legible, letters must be separated from numbers by at least 2 inches, and registration decal must be 3 inches behind (towards stern) of number... they major one here is "block" letter and "contrasting backround".... leaves some room for warden discretion, but when I asked- they basically said it needs to be easily read from a reasonable distance... don't put black letters on a black boat, and don't use heirglyphic lettering and you should be fine.
