Generally speaking, you shouldn't put much sand through an impeller. As long as you are on plane and keep the throttle down, you will only suck up water for the most part. That being said, after a few encounters with VERY shallow sand bars (like sticking out of the water shallow), I am still running the same impeller and haven't noticed any difference.

Generally the sleeve will go first, and both the sleeve and impeller will need replaced every few years.
