My understanding is that other states do NOT have to respect this. So, if you are in another state that requires plates, they can nail you for not having them.


They cannot nail you for being legal in your state of residence. The trailer must comply with the regulations in the state it is kept. If you're legal in WI, you cannot be ticketed in IL, MN, IN, AK, ME, or wherever you may roam.

This also means that if you reside in WI, but keep your boat/trailer in MN it must follow MN regulations (and vice versa - same thing for boats which is why there are a bunch of IL owned boats w/ WI registration stickers).
