Ohms law. Smaller wire does not make resistance. It has resistance. Longer the wire, the more resistance, which causes a voltage drop at the TM, and that results in more current draw from the TM.

Lots of drop calculators available.

Here's one. Plug in 24VDC, 60A, 20 feet, and 6 and 8 ga to see the difference. That is why I recommend 6 ga. Not because 8 ga. will burn up.
