I ran a 1700 tiller for 12+ years and only got over 30mph with the lightest of loads. My outboard was a Merc 60 two cycle. I eventually upgraded to a stainless merc vengeance prop. The prop improved hole shot, but top end improvement was barely noticeable from the alum prop. Average top speed for me was 29mph with a normal, two person load. Heavy loads would slow me down to approx 27 mph. I logged thousands of hours in my 1700; speeds are from GPS. Different boats of the same model can run slightly differently, so it's possible that you'll find a faster one but you should test drive before you buy if speed is a concern. While my 1700T wasn't a speed demon, it was a very nice boat to fish out of and handled the water very well for a 17'.
