Yes, run from your cranking battery, providing it's big enough to handle the load, and fully charged after every outing.

It's possible your battery is just not big enough. Doesn't matter how old it is.

As I suggested, I'd check it out, and replace with a dual purpose Cranking/Deep Cycle battery.
