I have a 2003 F115 and have the same issue however I haven't considered it as a grinding noise, rather similar to a "lower gear ratio". Hopefully that makes sense to somebody who is more familiar with these motors. I was under the impression it was to allow for slower, smaller adjustments in the trim while on the move so as to not over do it.
