I drove my tiller facing forward, and I mounted my 1197 on the edge of the starboard side tank ... it sat just in front of my right knee when I was driving the boat. There was enough room on the side tank to scoot your feet between the 1197 and the gunnel if you were walking that side of the boat. I used the 2.5" ram ball mount and simply screwed the base into the top of the deck. I also could have put the base on the sidewall if I had wanted to. The arm mount you posted the picture of would work well, too. In any case, it was a great setup for me. I went to a console this year, but really liked the way my old tiller was set up.
