Finding yourself without access to your truck can be anywhere between an inconvience and an expensive nightmare of downtime on a fishing trip. Dealerships want hundres of dollars for an extra key due to the fobs that have programmed chips that coordinate with your vehicle. But here's a way around that....

Take your registration and photo ID to a dealership and ask for the (free) key codes. Take the printout to a locksmith and have two keys made; one is door access (about $2) and one has a small fob that is programmed to match the ignition codes of your truck (about $70). The door access key will not start the truck, just open the door. Stash the door access key under your truck in one of those magnetic key holders. Stash the truck ignition key in the truck. $75 for the locksmith to do it, $200+ for the dealership to do it.

Callng a locksmith with your VIN is useless unless you have the key codes. It is against the law in MI to get the key codes from a dealership without being present with yourself, your ID and vechile registration in your name. Gotta go to the dealership forst no matter what. Only if you have the key codes can a locksmith bring you a working ignition key. (ignition keys always open doors)

Hope that's helpful!
