Hiya,

The VRO problems that OMC had with the system were in the late 80's. Problem was solved in fairly short order. your 96 should be just fine.

I would say if it isn't broken, don't fix it. It will use less oil than if you mixed 50:1. If you are unsure whether or not it is working to begin with, you can do as was stated and use a premix 50:1 in the main tank and run the motor with that for a while to see if the level of oil drops in the VRO tank. If it does, your VRO is working and you no longer need to run premix. If the oil level does not drop, then you can go through the process of removing the VRO tank. It is basically the same method used for when a remote tank is first hooked up to the system and used during break-in.
