Location: Green Bay, WI | Well they pretty much have to be within one foot of each other to achieve maximum benefits, according to Lowrance's literature. As to putting it under the step on the back of the hull, I've read where people have done this. As long as it has a clear shot to either side and you mount it within one foot of the 2D transducer, you should be fine. I don't know about *not* using the mount bracket though--I've not seen anything about that. As I understand it though, the optimum speed for the StructureScan system is right about 4 mph. However Doc Samson's videos do show some results at higher speeds--although you had better know what to look for in order to interpret what it's showing you. I would definitely check out his video on that stuff.
