Sounds wrong to me. Look into carefully, especially if you don't have a tach to see WOT rpms. When I ran a 50HP tiller on a 16 foot Ranger I used a big diameter 15 pitch SST and could run 17 pitch SST with a lighter load. But depending on the gear ratio it could be 12 pitch. 12 pitch sounds like something a work motor on a barge would run.
