I went with a 70HP Yamaha tiller for my boat. I had a 50HP Yamaha on a prior boat and it was rock solid. I believe the Merc 60 and Yamaha 60 share the same displacement and gear ratio, so that's probably not a big deal. The comment about the tiller handle is a good one though. The Yamaha comes with all of the nice features standard, whereas you have to upgrade to the Big Tiller handle on the Merc to get them, which would add to the cost.

I think either engine would be great, probably comes down to personal preference, price, which dealer you like more, etc.

I vote Yamaha but that's me
