| Trolling smaller baits, while holding on to the rod isn't a problem and is a lot more fun to hold on to the rod when trolling the smaller baits, because then YOU get to feel that initial hit from the fish. And you can impart additional action to the bait by pumping the rod forward and back to get the bait to speed up, then pause, etc. You can also raise and lower the rod tip which will raise and lower the bait up and over flats or weed line/rock areas, etc.
Trolling larger baits, big cranks and the such, has such a tremendous amount of drag to it as the bait moves through the water, that even at a slow to moderate speed, for any prolonged periods of time, you'll get exhausted holding on to the rod. If you're to really speed the boat up...4+ mph....you'll find out how long you can hold on to the rod for...each person is different...
Pros to holding on to the rod:
- Feel the fish hit
- You can control the depth easier for quick changes around structure
- You can impart additional action to the bait by pumping the rod...getting the bait to speed up, then pause, the speed up again, etc.
Cons to holding on to rod:
