You kinda have to learn how to deploy it... When I had a PD I would put one had on the lever and the other on the top head of the motor applying pressure. You have to do it all in one motion, kind of... I have watched my buddies struggle to put it down, but my wife never had any problems once she learned the tricks...

Also there are all kinds of things you can put on the shaft portion, all will help somewhat...
