| The best 4x4 for 10-12 grand would be without question the Toyota Landcruiser.
I would look for a 100 series landcruiser made between 1999 and 2007. You have room, size, capablility, locking differentials, and all the comfort and refinement in a legendary vehicle. It will give you 17 on the highway and around 14 in the city.
Keep in mind this is a true Full Time 4WD. It's not the pathetic crap they make nowadays where your 4WD kicks in after you've begun slipping.
Take a test drive in one and you'll be a Landcruiser owner forever.
