It isn't a necessity, probably the way gps is nowadays. I have the HDS/structure scan and it is a valuable tool to have in the boat and and is worth the money. Most of the time I have the screen split between gps and structure scan. It shows everything with a lot more clarity and you can tell exactly what those red and yellow blobs are on your 2d sonar. Structure will also be alot easier to pick apart especially with side scan.

If you decide against it and you decide to go with a lowrance unit. At least you have the option of adding it later.

The picture is of a rock bar in MN. One of things about side scan is the shallower the water, the less effective it is. As you can see in the picture. Pay no attention to the range numbers on the bottom of the screen. I wonder myself why they put those on there. But on top of the bar it is pretty blurry to the shallow side but to the drop off side it is pretty clear and can see rocks all the way to the rightside of the screen.
